New Addition

We have had a very exciting week. Details will be coming soon of what we have been working on. In the meantime, we did an adoption day at Animalerie Babalou on Saturday, and met some very nice people. Thanks to Nancy and her husband, we always have a good time with Nancy. Drop by and visit her to buy your dog food or have your dog groomed.

Yesterday afternoon, Stephie and I took a trip to Prescott to meet Pam from the Kingston Humane Society where we picked up Fred, a 2 year old Rottie, who was not doing so well at the shelter and had been there for a while. What a super dog, very underweight but lovely personality. Lots of kisses and hugs. The trip back was longer as we hit some very bad weather as we were driving into a snow storm. Fred is going make a great new addition to someone's family. We will be getting some pictures this week. The temperament testing done on Fred by Kingston is very positive and he is good with other dogs. He was picked up as a stray, but he has been very well looked after, coat is very shiny, very good with people, very social so not sure why someone didn't claim him. He needs to gain a few pounds but that should come pretty quickly now. Fred is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.

We will post new pics as we get them and update his story in the next few days.

Have a great day.

So far this week

We've had a busy week so far. Lunch with Anne from Rosie Animal Adoptions on Monday, good to see her again. Monique was also with us and updated us on the puppy mill situation in Quebec and her efforts to try get the legislation passed to put an end to them.

Yesterday, Jeniese got to practice her grooming on Charlie, my American Cocker Spaniel. She did a great job, considering he decided he doesn't like her. Not sure why, but everytime she comes by he does his best to get her to leave. Yet, he was her best friend when he was on the grooming table. She said she didn't rub liver treats all over her face, but I'm not quite sure I believe her. Anyway, she did a fabulous job and did it all by herself, with supervision from Nancy. He looks lovely. On Friday, she will be doing Maxwell so he is all fresh and sparkling for his appearance at the adoption day on Saturday.

While she was grooming, I zipped over to our vets in LaSalle to pick up Winston, the new addition to our adoption list. He is just fabulous. He will be joining Victor and Helene along with new foster brother Pedro until he finds his forever home. That's his picture you see in the blog. He is a King Shepherd mix, 2 years old. Just lovely. He is having a vacation at Country Meadows until his foster mom and dad are back from their mini-vacation. Thanks to Kim and Rachel at Country Meadows for their help with him. After I dropped him off at Country Meadows, I zipped by to the groomers, picking up a pizza along the way. Once we had done we all headed home. Jeniese was going back to help groom two more dogs, a lovely BMD and a husky mix. But then found out she had lost her keys to the house and the car. Bit of a panicky moment.

Today, has been a day of paperwork and webpage updating. How come the day's go 5 times as fast when you are not working for someone else. I think I need to have 30 hours a day now, when I was working full time I could have done with having only 10 hours in a day. Have a supper meeting this evening to determine long range plans for Foxy's so hopefully in the next few weeks we will have some exciting news to pass along.

Off now to walk the dogs and take in a bit of fresh air on an unusually mild winter day for Montreal. Its very pretty outside due to a snowfall last night. As I live backing on woods and a golf course all the tree are coated with a soft white powder, it looks like a picture card.

Enjoy the rest of the day and evening.

Weekend Happenings

Jeniese is celebrating her birthday today, so we wish her a very happy day. She wasn't feeling to good on Friday so hopefully she is going not to be too sick to eat her birthday cake.

Yesterday we hosted our first Adoption Information Day at our local IGA store. The reception and welcome we received was fabulous. Some, who had already adopted from Foxy's dropped by and spent some time. It's great living in a small village where you know lots of people, and if you don't know them someone you are talking to knows them.

Missy, my little blonde cocker, came along with me and was a huge hit with everyone. Had to stop people from trying to take her home. That's her in the picture. She was at a local pound in November and scheduled to be euthanized because she had a massive ear infection. She had also been returned to them 3 times in 4 years. She is the sweetest dog you have ever met. So we are assuming that her previous "guardians" (and I say that lightly) didn't want to take care of her ears as she seems prone to the infections. But she is the happiest little dog you'd ever want to meet. We kept waiting to find out what we were missing, but so far haven't been able to find a single thing that would make you want to give her up. Her ears are all fixed now and although she has to be on daily drops, everything is good.

Huge thank you to Victor, who was fostering Ziggy, along with his wife Helene. He came down and helped out for a few hours. He and Helene also hosted the foster junk food night evening on Friday night. More about that in a minute.

Today, we'll be doing another information session from 12:00 - 3:00pm.

Friday night we held a foster junk food night. Victor and Helene had designated Friday's a junk night for themselves. Anything goes in the way of junk food. So they invited us to participate. We had a great evening. Johane and Boyd came with their two little Foxy dogs, Tuffy, a miniature schnauzer, and Joy, a tiny little blonde American Cocker. They had a blast with Pedro, Helene and Victor's 100lb dog. Joy and Tuffy must about 25lbs between the two of them, lol.

Catherine dropped by too, while son Max was at Cubs. Stephie was supposed to drop by but took sick in the afternoon. Seems to be going around out here, people dropping like flies with this head cold, so crossing fingers it doesn't reach our house.

We had pizza, chili, and poutine, which Victor made and seems to be quite and art to making it. For those of you don't know what poutine is, its a Quebec dish, of french fries, gravy and cheese curds. Yes, I know, sound disgusting, which is what I thought for years, but, man, once you've tasted it you're hooked.

Hope you all have a good day today.

Goodbye to Fritz

Today has been quite a busy day. First thing this morning, Jeniese and I set off for the groomers at Animalerie Babalou where Jeniese was going to her first grooming on one of my own dogs, Maddie. That way if she screwed it up, it wouldn't matter. l0l. Just kidding J. While they all got on with the grooming, I went off to gather up needed supplies for the upcoming adoption information day this Saturday and Sunday, and of course, everything I needed was back-ordered or the computers were down, etc. Ahh, well, what can you do. I managed to get some things, then off back to the groomers to pick up the gang. Maddie looks lovely, I'll get a picture and try and post it after I have downloaded the photo software.

Once I got home, I checked the messages, and got some very sad news, Lise, who fostered/adopted one of our very special cases, Fritz, had left me a message that he died this morning. He had a massive heart attack and died while she was with him in her kitchen. She is terribly upset as she adored him. Fritz was a 9 year old, Rotti, who had been left living outside and had not had much care taken of him. We all loved him from the moment we saw him when Kim at Country Meadow Kennels took him in along with Maggs and Raggs, two sheepdogs who had been living with Fritz. The 3 of them were such a mess. Fritz's eyes were empty and we weren't sure how he was going to make it, but Lise wanted to take him home, so we made her a long term foster. Her dog, Apollo, another rottie, but much younger, got along great with him and so there he settled until today, when we received this very sad news. He lived a wonderful last year of his life with Lise and Apollo and he knew what it was like to be truly loved and adored.

Our hearts and thoughts go out Lise at this time. A memorium to Fritz will be posted on the In Memorium page on the Foxy website www.foxyscaninecompanions.ca in the next day or two.

We need foster homes for a little cocker spaniel and a german shepherd mix that will be coming in soon, so if you have thought about fostering, now is the time to do it. You can complete the foster application on our website under the Contact Us link. Also, got calls to surrende a lab mix, and to see if we had a foster for a 7 month old shih-tzu, while the lady's mother is in hospital. Unfortunately, no fosters available at the moment to help out. But you know what will turn up out of the blue.

Maybe off to Ottawa tomorrow with Rosie Animal Adoptions, then meeting with Julie from Guides Canine, then off to Country Meadows Kennel for a vist.

I dont know where the days go, they certainly didn't go this fast while I was working full time. Not sure how I had time to do that over the last 10 years.

Gotta go make supper now and get the pooches out for their evening stroll. Foxy's is closed for the evening and all seems well. Ziggy is on trial in his adoptive home, so hoping that all goes well. Maxwell is his usually bundle of energy and fun.

Here's Maxwell, isnt he a cutie. He's still waiting for his forever home.

Bye for now.

Welcome

Hi All,

Welcome to Foxy's Canine Companions blog. We hope you enjoy your visit with us.

Through this blog you will meet the fosters, the dogs and have an update of the dogs coming in for adoption and their stories of why they are for adoption. You will also get an idea of what we do on a daily basis of trying to rehome these dogs, you'll feel our frustration and experience our joys.

We ask that you respect this blog when posting. We will try to answer questions you may have, give support to those who have recently lost a beloved pet, and hopefully more of you out there will consider adopting from a rescue group rather than buying from a pet store.
